Lacquer, gel, colored, glitter, mat or magnetic effect … While nail polish is now available as a spray, a look back at the evolution of a beauty product which, in a few years, has established itself as an essential fashion accessory.

Did you know that the first nail polishes were actually made of henna, which was used by the Egyptians to dress their nails? Better still, it revealed a status since the colors worn served as a social distinction. In the 19th century, nail polish was mixed, but kept this notion of identification, this time reserved for artists, actors or dandy singers of the time.

1932, THE FIRST RED NAIL POLISH

The revolution took place in 1932 with Charles and Joseph Revson who created the first pigmented nail polish. This marks the launch of the Revson brand. The first red nail polish is born and the combination of the color of lipstick and nail polish, proposed by the brothers, is enchanting.

Iconic, monochrome red reigns supreme until the arrival of glitter or metallic nail polish in 1972. These new ranges with innovative textures, encrusted with glitter or mother-of-pearl shake up the vision of manicure, towards a new fashion accessory, with multiple possibilities.

NAIL ART, A MANICURE SUCCESS FROM ASIA

In the 2000s, nail art met with great success in Asia, but more mixed in Europe and across the Atlantic, inviting beauty addicts to customize their nails using stencils and stickers.

Today, nail polish comes in all shades, but also textures (matte, lacquer, sand, caviar, etc.). Increasingly, its action is also becoming more respectful of the nails. Indeed, beyond aesthetics, nail polish is cared for with protective (anti-yellowing, anti-breakage, strengthening …) or even nourishing virtues.

NAIL POLISH: CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVED FORMULAS

Ever more sophisticated, products are being transformed, in particular to meet the need for safety and visibility of formulas, increasingly sought after by users. For several years now, the brands Kure Bazaar, Scotch Naturals, Une and even La Roche Posay have been offering so-called “green” nail polishes, free of formaldehyde, toluene or even acetone.

They rely on a more natural formula, such as Kure Bazaar, whose composition is 85% of natural origin thanks to ingredients such as potato, wood pulp or even corn and wheat.

At the same time, the first oil-based nail polishes were created. These infuse pure micro-oils with pigments to combine nutrition, comfort and color.

As for the so-called semi-permanent “UV gel” varnishes, it is an impeccable and long-lasting manicure that they now promise. Their specific formula associated with the radiation of UV lamps have the power to increase the durability of the product tenfold.

2015, FROM BRUSH TO SPRAY

Even more surprisingly, the recent creation of the Nails Inc brand: the “Paint Can” spray varnish. This vaporizes on the fingertips but only adheres to the nail and fades to the skin. In about twenty seconds the nail polish is set.

Then just wash your hands to remove the color from the skin.

We recommend that you use the manicure and pedicure set to take care of your nails before applying any kind of varnish.
